A shower pan replacement is usually needed when the base of the shower is leaking, cracked, soft underfoot, or causing water damage. The shower pan is the waterproof floor system underneath the tile or molded base, so problems there can lead to expensive structural damage if ignored.
Signs you may need a shower pan replacement
Water leaking outside the shower
- Water stains on ceilings below
- Damp flooring near the shower
- Mold or mildew smell that keeps returning
Cracks or movement in the shower floor
- Fiberglass or acrylic pans can crack
- Tile shower floors may feel spongy or shift
- Flexing under your feet often means the base underneath is failing
Loose or missing grout that keeps coming back
Repeated grout cracking can indicate movement or water damage beneath the tile.
Persistent mold despite cleaning
This can mean moisture is trapped underneath due to failed waterproofing.
Drain area deterioration
Leaks around the drain connection are a common shower pan failure point.
Rust or corrosion
Older metal shower pans can rust through.
Age
Many shower pans last:
- Acrylic/fiberglass: 10–20 years
- Properly built tile shower pans: 20–30+ years
